È stata la 16ª edizione del torneo maschile – che faceva parte del Nabisco Grand Prix 1989 – e la 1ª del torneo femminile, inserita nel calendario del WTA Tour 1989. Sia il torneo maschile che quello femminile si sono giocati nell'impianto per il tennis del Grand Champions Hotel di Indian Wells,[1][2] in California, dal 13 al 20 marzo 1989.
